The influence of print ads and how young adults assess them

Print ads have developed a striking impact on the younger generation over the years. There was a point in time when all an advertising company had to do was come up with a catchy theme that young adults could relate to and cater their product to that consumer. Nothing much has changed since that era first began. Now companies are starting to see a correlation between the way they market to the younger audiences and the impact it has on the younger consumers. For example, the ad pictured above courtesy of Apple Bottoms, a designer denim line, features its founder shown with a model, posed in a sexually provocative manner. The ad could easily be perceived differently by young adults, in terms of the body language of the model or the clothing that she is wearing. Could it be that print ads have an impact on the way young adults assess gender roles? To assist in answering this research question, this group has decided to develop a qualitative study. The hypotheses of study are as follows:

H1: Most of the female participants will agree that they are more influenced by print ads than male participants.

H2: The younger age range (18-20) will be more influenced by print ads than the older age range (25+) of participants.

H3: Participants will encounter more print ads in magazines than any other avenue of marketing mentioned in the survey.

H4: Female participants will be influenced negatively, (i.e. less attractive attitude, low self-esteem) by print ads over male participants.

H5: Male participants will not be able to distinguish gender roles in print ads.

With regards to previous research on print ads and gender roles, correlations had been established between the two. For this qualitative study, a sample mean of 120 Georgia State University students were surveyed, using a 5-point Likert scale that was developed by the group. The survey created provided a concrete definition of the term gender roles and was used to measure the participant's ideas towards gender roles, personal self-image, and their attitude towards the images that they see in print ads, and where they are most likely to encounter a print ad. The survey also inquired about demographics of the participants, such as their age, gender, and race.

This discussion feature is pretty cool...maybe we should use this as opposed to just random typing on the front page....pretty cool Maggie!

Hey team, Today we received our grades for our 1st project together and it came to my attention that some of you think I did not contribute as much to group as others did. I'm concerned and would like to know what I can do to better for the final group project. Thanks

Hey guys! I'm sorry that you didnt get the grade you were shooting for Erin...but hopefully we all can step our game up with this project so that we all can get the grades we want. Personally, I think we ALL contributed to being somewhat last minute with the project...and I would love for us to meet on days outside of class so that doesnt happen again. I am not the best at writing survey questions...but I will do my best to come up with about 5 or 10 questions like Maggie (and the rest of the group suggested)...I however will not be posting them on the Wiki, because I would like for my team to look them over before we post them for Rufo to view. So everyone have a good weekend...and I'll see you Monday (hopefully...ya'll know my birthday is next week....i might not come :o) ) -V

Let's not forget to bring in our questions for the survey so that we can start putting together a good survey to distribute to our sample. We should be able to go over this info tonight (4/10) after class. See ya' then!

Hey Val, Hope your brother is recovering well. Candice and I need your questions that you had for the survey. You can just post them up here. Thanks!

Of coarse I couldnt post my questions for the survey last night. I was in the hospital with my brother all day yesterday & I am taking care of him now. I posted some questions on the survey page and just a few thoughts of how to better the research. I have research on the topic. I do feel however that we need to meet (as a group---ALL OF US) and assign duties, finalize the survey, pass it out and start getting numbers to analyze...the due date is right around the corner guys!

Hey guys! Even though I called everyone (and emailed), I figured it was a better idea to post what we're talking about up. The email basically said...."We felt like it would be beneficial for us to meet as an entire group on saturday in the library plaza at 1pm to discuss any project issues before Erin and Candice finalize the survey. Also, I kinda thught the subgroups idea was a good iead. It keeps ppl from doing too much work. For example,

Candice & Erin -- finalize the survey
Maggie & Marcel -- create coding scheme
Valene & Amanda -- distribut 60 surveys a piece, and code surveys

We all come together to analyze the data.
Also, we need to all be responsible for writing a summary of our own research to serve as a literature review for Rufo to read.

As far as grading goes, the person you teamed up with would be responsible for individually grading you to prevent mix ups and misunderstandings...how does that sound??

Think about it...and see you saturday!!

I think its a good idea that we meet because I think some of the stuff is still up in the air. By the way, Val, have you spoken to Amanda? I havent seen her in class in forever! See you saturday!

To recap what was discussed after class yesterday, the groups goals for Monday, 4/17/06 will be as follows:
1)Try to put together a final survey to be distributed next week
2) Develop a coding scheme for responses (Marcel & Maggie)-you two may need the actual survey in order to do this so Erin and I will try to have something to you for our Saturday meeting
3)Determine what's being measured for each question asked on the survey
4)Determine the study's research question(s) and hypothesis
5)Each person should develop a list of what they think should be discussed for this project (i.e., background info, previous studies conducted, qualitative analysis, conclusion)
6)Come up with our final subgroups for this project and determine days and times that we will meet to discuss our progress for each section
**As a brief reminder team (per Rufo):
This assignment is worth way more points than the last. If everyone expects a fair grade, everyone should do their share of the work. If one person doesn't do their share, the team will continue and fill in the gaps as need be. But in order to make this project a success, it is expected that everyone contribute to the project. I would hate for their to be any misunderstandings about the grades for this project team. With that said, see everyone (hopefully) on Saturday!

I think that the references for the lit reviews should be cited in APA style. I don't remember him saying Chicago style, so let's try to change them where you posted your lit reviews. We also need to keep this in mind when we cite them under our reference link.

Anonymous said

at 11:46 am on Apr 21, 2006

I have every intention of using APA style when creating our Lit review. I'm waiting on everyone's posting before I start that process...however, it would be nice for everyone to post an APA citation.

Just need clarification: Are we posting our content analysis reports from the magazines before the weekend is up? I had asked for the lit reviews to be up. I still thought we had to sit and discuss the whole magazine situation....let me know. Oh....yeah. Amanda and I finished passing out surveys...so we're waiting on a coding scheme.

C'mon guys....can i get some coding scheme???

Anonymous said

at 3:48 pm on Apr 22, 2006

what do you guys think about having a semi-provacative print ad on each applicable page? it would kind of go with the theme of the study but it wouldn't neccesarily have to be a clothing ad. just thought it would be a good idea so i welcome your feedback. btw, the Apple Bottom ads are the only ones i found that looked half-way decent to put on here! :-)

Anonymous said

at 4:26 pm on Apr 22, 2006

were you and amanda going to generate the results for the survey or was that to be done by the entire group?

Anonymous said

at 5:53 pm on Apr 22, 2006

Amanda and I are supposed to code the survey...like..if a = 3pts and b = 2 pts...etc. But we havent received a coding scale yet and we're trying to have this done before monday because its going to take a LONG time to do that for 120 surveys. And truthfully, if we can have a scale before the weekend is over than we do need to code the survey as a group. I think we should also find some ads showing men and women in opposite gender roles...maybe an ad of a man cooking...and a woman mowing the lawn would be nice.

Anonymous said

at 5:57 pm on Apr 22, 2006

also...i need for everyone to get that literature review paragraph posted.

Anonymous said

at 10:21 am on Apr 23, 2006

I have a question: Do you want to keep the literature review page the way it is? (provided we make sure our citations are APA style)....read it over and let me know.

Anonymous said

at 2:39 pm on Apr 23, 2006

I think its cool. We could probably tweak it a lil bit by adding an intro (maybe). Other than that, it looks fine to me. What does everyone else think?

ok team, my lit review is now up! i will be posting my content analysis tomorrow, hopefully by 5:30. see ya in class tomorrow!

Anonymous said

there's no coding scale yet...that's why we havent coded the surveys. We've decided to code them based on answers...and once we receive the actual coding scale...we'll all just have to pitch in (as a group).

Anonymous said

at 11:31 am on Apr 24, 2006

Val, I know the coding scheme is kind of confusing, Marcel and I will explain it to you in class today. Don't do any extra work, once Marcel and I have the survey answers, we will do the rest of it. I will see you guys in class today!

hey guys. Amanda and I are trying to make some pie graphs now...but we need to sit down and analyze the numbers that we've posted first because....we dont know what to make the chart of. And also....we made a pie graph just showing the gender distribution...but I dont know how to put it on the wiki...does anyone know how to save it so that it will appear (as opposed to having to click a link to make it show up)....that would be awesome! So, before class/after class on Wednesday..we need to analyze the data....go ahead and I guess have our discussions ready for posting as well...sound good?

Hey guys! We were about to max out on the amount of files we could upload and it wouldnt allow me to post my article of interest...so I deleted the ones from the ethnography so we would have more space...

Please go through your reference under the lit review to make sure it is cited in APA format. A few of them are not correct under the lit review and reference links for the website. It is very important that the APA format is consistent throughout the website. If you need help, please look it up.

Hey Maggie,
Tell me if you've tried this: Upload the article under "Files" (the article has to be in adobe acrobat format)and possibly saved to your own computer, if the file uploads then just add a link to the Articles of interest. If that doesn't work there may not be enough file space left, but I really don't think that will be the problem. If none of that works, gimme a call and we'll figure something out. 404-259-4302
